Black Friday Sale: Long Thanksgiving lines outside GameStop as shoppers look for PlayStation 5 consoles

COLMA, California (KGO) – While most stores chose to close on Thanksgiving, some opened to large crowds and long lines.

Many waited several hours to arrive at GameStop in Colma, California.

The most sought-after item among these shoppers…

“I’m here for PS5!” Michelle DeLeon said.

It’s a PlayStation 5, it’s hard to buy now,” said shopper Tony Santos.

“I’ve been waiting for this day all of November,” said Colin Chiu.

In fact, shoppers here tell us that they choose to stay closer to their homes and away from the big cities.

“San Francisco has been really crazy lately,” said Michelle DeLeon. “I’ve been in this area for a long time so I feel like this is the safest place.”

While stores like Target and Best Buy closed on Thanksgiving, many businesses were open, like movie theaters.

We came across a family outing for young people at Century Theaters in Daly City.

“Do you like Thanksgiving? Why do you like it so much?” We asked a 5 year old girl. Her response was simply, “Because I can spend the day with my family!”

“It’s Thanksgiving, it’s my brother’s birthday, and we’re going to the movies,” said 7-year-old Dari Daniels.

“Finally, there’s something open-minded,” said Giovanni Larinaga.

“You have surround sounds, clear sound effects,” said Henry Larinaga.

The brothers traveled from San Francisco to Daly City to see a movie.

But for those who still get questioned about Thanksgiving shopping, many here will tell you, they’re buying for loved ones.

“I’ll give it to my kids,” Santos said. “They don’t know yet, it’s supposed to be a surprise. I hope they can’t see that.”

“For my son Shane Bauer, that’s all he wants for Christmas, the XBox Series X, not digital. I’ve heard it a million times so I snuck out today after we ate hoping to get it,” John Bauer said.

And for those who admitted to buying items for themselves, they also said it was okay, because their wives said so.

“My wife is like, ‘You should go get one,’ and I’m like, ‘What’s the problem? You know because the happy wife, happy life. She said I can’t open it for a while which is a good thing, Eddie Anderson said “but I’m happy.”

And while many major retailers are closed on Thanksgiving, they will open as early as Black Friday. The target we came across in Daly City opens at 7am, like many other locations across the bay and across the country.
