Frerichs is a civil engineer and contractor from Lombard, Illinois.
He was kidnapped in January 2020 from the capital, Kabul. He is believed to be held by the Taliban-linked Haqqani Network.
Since the Taliban, the Haqqani network or its affiliates in Afghanistan have kidnapped Freshs, US Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth have repeatedly called on the Trump and Biden administrations to make his safe return a priority.
Biden says, “The Taliban should release Mark immediately before they can expect any consideration of their aspirations to legality. This is non-negotiable.”
The Taliban want a prisoner exchange – in exchange for the release of convicted drug lord Bashir Noorzai in exchange for the United States.
For the Friedrichs, there is no price for a man who has served his country and cannot go home.
“When they gave me that phone call and told me they had found Mark and he was on a plane, you were going to meet him, and I would give him the most hugs when I see him, and I don’t think I want to leave him,” his sister said.
His sister Charlene Kakura issued the following statements:
“My brother is the only American hostage currently being held by the Taliban.”
We trusted the Trump administration and they did nothing, and they put it under the rug when they made the peace deal with the Taliban. We had high hopes for the Biden administration, but they also repeatedly put other issues before Mark’s safe return.”
We understand that the Taliban have been clear about what they want, and have repeatedly told the US government and the media the same answer every time they were asked how Mark could come home. He’s only being held hostage because top officials didn’t present President Biden with a decision on action. President, please bring my brother home before it is too late.”
