Apple Inc., whose car play interface is used to control millions of motorcycle music, receive instructions and make phone calls, is working to increase its reach inside cars.

According to people familiar with the effort, the company is working on technology that will provide access to functions such as climate control systems, speedometers, radios and sets. The “Iron Heart” initiative is still in its infancy and will require the cooperation of carmakers.

This work highlights the idea that cars can be a big money maker for tech giants – even without selling the car itself. Although plans for an Apple car have failed, including a change of key executives this year, it allows users to connect their iPhones to a car to handle so-called infotainment features. Seven years after its launch, CarPlay is now offered by most major car companies.

Iron Heart will take Carpley one step further. The iPhone-based system can access controls, sensors and settings, with people who said the plan was secret because they did not want to be identified.

The effort will be similar to Apple’s approach to health and home technology. The company offers an app on the iPhone that can access data from external health devices using its HealthCut protocol. Meanwhile, the home app uses Apple’s Home Kit system to control smart appliances, including thermostats, security cameras and door locks.

Iron Heart will represent Apple’s strongest push in cars since the car play was released in 2014, but it can’t be a hit with carmakers. They are reluctant to hand over control of key features to Apple. Although CarPlay is now available in more than 600 car models, Apple’s other initiatives launched in recent years have slowed down with automakers.

In 2015, Apple began allowing carmakers to create third-party apps for CarPlay that could access car radio, GPS and climate control. Apple may eventually delay or cancel Iron Heart features if they do not show enough promise.

Some manufacturers, including Tesla Inc., have largely ignored the efforts of Apple and Google’s car and opted for their next-generation infotainment ecosystem. Ford Motor Company is trying to be more ambitious. He recently hired Doug Field, a former Tesla chief engineer and head of Apple’s own car project, to work on technology in his car.

Still, carmakers risk disturbing iPhone fans by focusing on their own asynchronous systems. And that could eventually lead to more of them adopting Apple’s technology.
