Let’s face it – being in IT is hard work. Living in IT with remote employees is incredibly difficult. You’re supporting countless pieces of software, as well as other demands on SaaS back-end, hundreds of sets of potential Internet providers, RF environments, Wi-Fi routers, and other environments at home. That’s when people are. Dependent Have to do on their devices. 100 Of their work. If you’re into IT support remote organizations, here are some practical steps to help your team improve your work from a home Wi-Fi environment.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers has been managing the enterprise IT network since 2009. Through his experience with firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, 100s Max, and 100s iPads, Bradley will highlight these methods. Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, tell stories from the trenches of IT management and improve their products for Apple IT departments.

Solve speed issues.

If your customers report problems while working from home – the first thing to understand is the speed at which they are gaining compared to the speed at which they are paying. You can use tools like the SpeedTest app so that employees can take some basic measurements with their Internet coverage.

If you find significant discrepancies in what you are paying for vs. speed, start asking more questions.

  • How far are you from your router?
  • How many walls are you going through? What are the walls made of?
  • How many other devices are on your network?
  • Is anyone else working at home or doing virtual school?

A simple test to determine if you have a Wi-Fi problem or an ISP problem is to bring your user into your router and do a speed test. If you see dramatically different results – you have a local Wi-Fi problem. Unfortunately, these issues are difficult to diagnose remotely. One task will be for the employee to run a dedicated Ethernet cable from his router to his ISP at his primary place of work. Wired Ethernet will be more reliable – especially for video calls / webinars. You will need to add USB-C to the Ethernet adapter. As a last resort, an app like Pingar can be valuable for monitoring your connection.

Upgrading to Wi-Fi

Another consideration is to upgrade (or suggest upgrading) their router if you have a Wi-Fi problem. For home use, it’s hard to go wrong with the Aero 6 at the price point. I prefer the Aero Pro 6, but the price point is too high. If you have many people trying to work from home, the budget router will show its weakness.

If you plan to work from home permanently, it might make sense to have a mesh network where each node is hard-wired. You will need to hire an electrician to run the CAT5 / CAT6 cable from your main router to the nodes, but this will build a strong network. Some ISPs will also run the cable for you.

Build only 5 GHz network.

If you’re in a situation where you can’t run Ethernet on a laptop and have upgraded to Wi-Fi, but are still having problems – just building a 5 GHz SSID Access issues may be reduced. If the user lives in a crowded neighborhood, in terms of RF, get them on a network. Only 5 GHz may be a viable option to limit interference.

If you encounter a situation where you need to dig deeper into a user’s home RF environment, install Wi-Fi Explorer from them so you can guess what’s going on around them.

System cleaning

If you have a poorly performing device that is being charged Wi-Fi, it is possible that the machine itself needs some attention. Although Macs are very secure, there are still many pieces of malware that can be installed. I recommend CleanMyX as a clean-up tool that can be run to diagnose malware issues and clean up hard space when the hard drive is full (another source of slowness). ۔
