Apple has announced a new agreement with the App Store developers, with a few minor changes that should make apps for the iPhone and iPad slightly more profitable for developers. The company has not changed the big policy that some people were hoping for, but at least that’s it.
Apple’s new App Store policies
A new agreement between Apple and App Store developers in the United States has been developed by US-based app creators to address the class action suite. “The agreement will help the App Store create better business opportunities for developers, while secure and reliable marketplaces are preferred by consumers,” Apple said.
The most important change comes when developers can get paid for items within an app without having to rely on Apple’s app purchases. Now, a developer can use the contact information obtained from the app to email users about outside purchase options. This means they can sell items and other app purchases without cutting Apple.
On this, the company said, “Apple is also making it clear that developers can use communications such as email to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS app. As always, developers can use Apple We will not charge a commission for any purchases made outside the app or the App Store. Users must be willing to communicate and have the right to opt out.
The biggest problem is that developers still have to go out of the app themselves to offer alternative payment methods. The problem with Epic Games was not because Epic emailed users, but because they were promoting payment options from Fortnight outside the App Store, which is not allowed. Maybe when this suit is fixed, we will come up with a more satisfactory result.
Another change comes in the prices that developers can charge. Now, developers have more than 500 price points instead of less than 100.
Apple has also announced a fund to help small US developers who have earned less than $ 1 million for each of their apps through the US Store Front each calendar year. Account between 2021. Covers 99% of developers in the United States. However, Apple did not provide details about the fund, saying only that we will learn more later.
Finally, the company announced that businesses earning less than $ 1 million a year will continue to benefit from lower commissions for at least three years, which will help small developers make more money.
This is a step in the right direction.
It’s hardly a big change that we thought could come from this class action lawsuit, but it’s no better than anything. Any move that allows small businesses to generate more revenue is a positive one, although we expected a bit more in terms of payment options outside the App Store.
