Andorra vs England: All-Women Referees Team selected for Saturday’s World Cup qualifiers | football news
An all-female referee team will take charge of England’s World Cup qualifier in Andorra on Saturday.
Katerina Monzul was chosen as a referee, along with Ukrainian assistant referees Marina Streltska and Svetlana Grushko.
The VAR is Stephanie Frappart of France, but the fourth official and the VAR assistant referee are both males – Denis Schurmann and Victor Matthias respectively.
The historic moment marks the first time a woman has refereed a senior men’s match in England.
Monzol had coached a senior international player before, however, he was part of the first all-women refereeing team when San Marino faced Gibraltar in the Nations League in November 2020.
She also has experience in the Women’s World Cup and European Championships and is a referee in the Ukrainian Premier League.
Frappart ran the men’s Champions League and also took charge of the men’s World Cup qualifiers, becoming one of the sport’s leading women in the process.
Appointments come the same year that Rebecca Welch Became the first female referee appointed to take charge of a Premier League matchHarrogate’s 2-0 home defeat to Port Vale in April.
Meanwhile, England are gearing up to take on small Andorra after collecting 16 points from a potential 18 in Group A, including a 4-0 win over their opponents at the weekend during the last international break in September.
Gareth Southgate’s squad then welcomes Hungary to Wembley on October 12, as they look to take further steps towards qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
