Air Corps will send PCR tests to Germany to clear the backlog | Ireland

The Defense Forces are transporting PCR swabs to Germany for laboratory testing as the health service comes under increasing pressure during the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Air Corps crews are scheduled to make three trips to Munich this week to reduce the backlog of testing. A similar process was carried out during the third wave, when 12 flights to Munich provided high HSE capacity in January.

The medical vice president said yesterday that ramping up PCR testing to the scale needed to test everyone who needs one in a couple of days was “impossible.”

Dr. Ronan Glenn’s comments about testing delays came as the number of counties without available appointments rose from 13 on Tuesday to 17 yesterday.
