A man has been charged with murder after fatal gunfire in the rural town of Far North Queensland

A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder, after a fatal shooting in the small town of Far North Queensland yesterday afternoon.

Police said a 35-year-old man was shot in the chest at his home near Watsonville, southwest of Cairns, after an altercation with another man.

Acting Detective Inspector Anthony Lowe said police were called to the West Bischoff Road address at about 3:50 p.m. after calls were made by other residents of the property.

He said that officers discovered the body of the 35-year-old and detained another man.

“They are partners,” he said.

“It is alleged that a gun was used as a weapon. As for the caliber of the weapon, it is still subject to forensic examination,” he added.

He said the police were still trying to determine the cause of the quarrel and investigations were underway.

“The crime scene at this time is still subject to forensic examination as well,” he said.

The 32-year-old has been denied bail and is due to appear in Meribah Magistrates Court today.
