Shasta Lake, Shasta County (CBS) – The Fawn Fire in Shasta County north of Reading that broke out on Wednesday expanded rapidly, leading to mandatory evacuations Thursday.
After burning about 50 acres early Wednesday night, the bushfires have exploded to 1,200 acres as of Thursday afternoon. It is currently five percent contained.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order Thursday morning for the Mountain Gate community. All roads off the Old Oregon Trail in both directions between Bear Mountain north to Interstate 5 must be evacuated immediately.
A temporary collection point for evacuees has been established in the Shasta College parking lot at 11555 Old Oregon Trail in Redding.

The evacuation order was expanded at approximately 12:45 p.m. to cover all roads north of Old Oregon Road in Akrich north to Pine Grove and east of Interstate 5.

Less than half an hour later, additional mandatory evacuations were ordered for all of the South Old Oregon Trail Holiday Road.

Evacuees were urged to take their important belongings, medicine and pets, if possible. A second sanctuary was established at the First Church of the Nazarene at 2255 Bechelli Lane in Redding.
In addition, an evacuation warning has been issued for areas north of SR-299 and east of I-5. Redding police said Code Red notices were issued in that area.
Residents who chose to evacuate were advised to go for SAR 299.
There were reports that fire was approaching from the Alert Wildfire camera at Bear Mountain.

The Faun fire began in the area of Vondel Road and Radcliffe Road about five miles northeast of Shasta Lake, which is south of Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake Reservoir.
