58-year-old inmate dies after medical event at Erie County Holdings Center

Buffalo, NY (WIVB) – A 58-year-old inmate at Erie County Holding Center has died after experiencing a medical event, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said.

James Ellis was found unresponsive in his unit Tuesday night, according to the sheriff’s office, and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office said Ellis was on a high alert in his unit during a routine 11-minute tour before he was discovered unresponsive.

They said CPR and other medical treatments began, and the American Medical Rescue (AMR) crew arrived and took care of the patient soon after.

The sheriff’s office said it has completed the necessary reports for the New York State Correctional Commissions, the New York State Attorney’s Office, and the US Department of Justice. It is investigating the accident and is awaiting the report of the Erie County medical examiner.

The sheriff’s office said Ellis is being held at the facility on domestic charges and parole violations.
