5 Easy Steps to Set Up Video Extensions in Microsoft Advertising

The video extension is officially here and we’ve got the updates on how to add them to your account!

Video extension access

Earlier this spring, Microsoft Advertising announced that the video extension was moving to beta. Now, they’re available globally to desktop advertisers. The mobile version is only available in the United States and will expand to additional locations over time. A timeline for a wider mobile rollout has not yet been announced.

How does a video extension work?

Video extensions appear as a thumbnail in front of an ad and expand when clicked. Video extensions can be used in conjunction with other extensions, including site links. Advertisers can add a link to the video overlay that will take users to the landing page.

Each charge is charged at the same price as the ad clicks on the video views. Only the first click is charged and no later clicks are received on the same ad unit in the same auction.

How to configure video extensions

Configuring video extensions is quick and easy. Here are the steps:

  1. They need to be created in the Microsoft Ads UI (at least for now), so you’ll need to navigate to Ads and Extensions from the left navigation and then select “Extensions” from the top navigation.
  2. Once there, select video extensions from the dropdown.
  3. Then click the “Add Extension” button.
  4. If the account does not yet have another video extension, two large white boxes will appear (where you will be able to browse existing extensions in the future). Below the box you will need to click on the link that says “Add a new video extension”.

  5. Then you need to upload your video or add it via a link. You will then need to add some information, including:
    1. Name (this is not public and is for organizational / labeling purposes only)
    2. Select thumbnail for your video
    3. Add display text, which will appear at the bottom of the video
    4. If the video does not load, add ALT text.
    5. Add action text to the CTA button, which will show the video as it goes down.
    6. Enter a final URL for the CTA button. Separate URLs can be used for desktop and mobile.
