Present GMC Sierra 1500 It debuted on the market in 2019, but its yawn-inducing interior was a huge disappointment compared to one of its main competitors, Ram 1500. That could change for 2022 with the arrival of the updated Sierra 1500, which receives a revised design, major interior upgrades and Super Cruise available for driver assistance. Furthermore, two new models join the lineup – the premium Denali Ultimate and the AT4X Off-Road Vehicle.
The new cabin is inspired by good design GMC Yukon SUV, with extended touchscreens and modified materials compared to the outgoing Sierra 1500. And while the exterior design remains similar, keen eyes will notice a few tweaks that keep the truck going. The most obvious update to the exterior of the 2022 GMC Sierra is the front end, which features a wider grille than before. Refined grille textures appear on every trim level, with Denali and Denali Ultimate styling aimed at other luxury vehicles of the future. The new front bumper hides LED fog lights, while the LED headlights themselves get a dual projector design with bolder C-shaped daytime running lights and moving lighting sequences.
New wheel designs and three new exterior colors – Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic and Desert Sand Metallic – give the profile a slight update. The truck bed remains unchanged, which is still available with the MultiPro smart six-position tailgate and CarbonPro composite construction. Overall, the sharp new face and slight revisions elsewhere keep the new Sierra current without detracting from its already beautiful exterior design.

For those basic modifications, the new 2022 Denali Ultimate receives a front grille with dark “Vader chrome” finishes and exterior accents, 22-inch low-gloss black wheels, and revised badging. Meanwhile, the new AT4X also receives its black 18-inch wheels and optional rocker guard for aggressive off-road driving.
If the exterior of the 2022 Sierra is similar to its immediate predecessor, the interior is a huge departure. GMC has revealed images of its two new models, the Denali Ultimate and AT4X, tearing their cabins virtually unchanged from the high-spec. Yukon Denali and AT4. That means an angular, clean dashboard design and revised climate controls that look more modern and refined than the previous Sierra 1500’s sleek design.
The new 2022 Denali Ultimate design brings a number of improvements over the regular Denali and comes standard with Adaptive Ride Control, premium leather headlining, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system with embossed stainless-steel speaker grilles. What sets the Denali Ultimate apart in terms of style are unique inlays in Baldau wood in a matte finish, paired with exquisite Alpine Umber upholstery. A topographic map of Mount Denali, Alaska, appears engraved in wood and embossed into the full-grain leather seats. The leather dashboard, door panels and center console add to the appeal; Ditto for the front seats 16 massage modes. Ultimate will start at a high price of $80,395.
The new AT4X’s trim is similarly polished. While the AT4X isn’t quite as luxurious as the Denali Ultimate, the AT4X still gets standard 16-way function massage seats, plus special Vanta elm trim and leather upholstery. The Bose audio system is similarly standard, all dressed in the same general interior design as the Denali Ultimate. The deluxe and capable AT4X will require $74,995 to start.
Even the lower trim of the revised Sierra lineup gets a new cabin design. Although no pictures were available from GMC, a company representative confirmed that the Sierra SLE and SLT will feature an interior similar to their Yukon counterparts, just like the Denali, Denali Ultimate, AT4, and AT4X. Furthermore, every model from SLE and up will get a standard 13.4-inch infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a significant upgrade over the Sierra’s flagship 8.0-inch touchscreen and analog gauges with an 8.0-inch center display. Only the basic Sierra Pro will dispense with pixel overload.
The new Sierra 1500 AT4X is more than just an interior design upgrade, with a long list of suspension and component improvements that will help it get off the beaten track. Chief among them is a new set of Multimatic DSSV spool dampers. Based on existing technology in the smallest Colorado ZR2 And in common with the mechanically similar Silverado ZR2, these dampers provide much greater control over diverse off-road terrain without sacrificing on-road comfort. Although we haven’t tested them in a full-size capture app, they don’t hold true in medium-sized Colorado.
The AT4X also benefits from unique springs that increase wheel travel by 50mm in the front and 25mm in the rear compared to the regular AT4. Front and rear electronic locking differentials are standard, improving traction and agility in many low-traction off-road conditions. The lower shield of the larger transfer case helps the aforementioned rocker guards prevent accidental damage on large obstacles. In addition to hardware upgrades, the drive mode selector includes a Terrain mode that enables one-pedal driving with the transfer case set to 4-Low.
Look, but don’t touch
Standard on Sierra Denali Ultimate and optional on Denali will be GM’s new Super Cruise driver assistance technology. When the Sierra is on a specific route, the Super Cruise can be activated to allow the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel, allowing the truck to handle lane positioning and tracking, adaptive cruise control, and even automatic lane change and overtaking. Even more impressive, the Super Cruise also works with a trailer in tow — the driver can even enter the length of the trailer to enable the same automatic lane changes, with the truck monitoring the proper distance back and to the side.
Making Super Cruise better is 2022 Sierra’s Android Automotive The infotainment system on SLE models and above. Thanks to the built-in Google Maps feature, the system can provide route suggestions based on Super Cruise availability. It also features other apps from Google’s ecosystem, such as Assistant and Play, and will provide over-the-air updates. It will also come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
These software improvements will help take advantage of a slightly modified powertrain and chassis in the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Although the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s are mostly unchanged, the 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine now achieves what It is estimated at 420 lb-ft (569 Nm), a 20 percent increase over the current 2.7 348 lb-ft (472 Nm). Power is uncertain, but the outgoing four-wheel drive produces 310 hp (231 kW). This all adds up to the 9,600-pound maximum trailer rating for the two-wheel drive version, a 200-pound upgrade through 2021.
Also receiving some minor improvements is the optional 3.0-liter Duramax six-turbodiesel. A few minor chassis tweaks mean buyers can now opt for a diesel with GMC’s Max Towing Package, raising the trailer’s rating to 13,200 pounds with two-wheel drive — a 4,000 pound improvement over the outgoing Duramax. The automaker is also proud to have the Sierra Duramax 4×4 rated at 13,000 pounds, a best-in-class number among all-wheel drive light diesel pickup trucks.
It’s strange that GMC is already marketing a 2021 pickup along the lines of 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited (in the Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali classes), which led us to believe it would deliver pre and post facelift trucks at the same time. The automaker says the decision was due to longer-term product planning, and more Sierra releases may also help find new homes through fleet sales and discounted prices. Ram follows a similar tactic with 1500 classic, a copy of the previous generation of the truck sold alongside its successor since 2019.
Whatever the case, the new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 promises a massive improvement over the previous Limited model. We really liked the nice, quiet exterior, but the cabin materials and design were a far cry from the marks from its competitors. That changes for 2022, and with a massive array of technology and functionality upgrades, Sierra will finally become a major contender in the full-size truck segment.
